PRO-AM DANCING.

What is Pro-Am Dancing?

Pro-Am, short for Professional-Amateur, is a popular format where a professional dance instructor partners with their student in competitions or shows. This concept mirrors the format used by the famed BBC show “Strictly Come Dancing.” Additionally, there’s a “Teacher-Student” division that allows amateur instructors to also dance competitively with their students.

The Benefits of Pro-Am Dancing

  • Guided Learning: Dancing with a professional teacher accelerates learning by providing direct guidance on body action and timing, eliminating the need to search for a compatible dance partner.
  • Enjoyment and Glamour: Pro-Am dancing is not only a glamorous activity but also immensely enjoyable and fun, offering a blend of social interaction and lively entertainment.

Options Available in Pro-Am

The are various possibilities in Pro-Am dancing. Participants can engage in activities ranging from taking a medal test and performing in small social events to dancing at prestigious balls or competing in high-stakes Pro-Am competitions.

Structure of Pro-Am Competitions

Pro-Am competitions are typically categorized by:

  • Levels: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced
  • Age Groups: Under 34, 35-45, 46-55, 56-65, over 65
  • Styles: Ballroom, Latin, Smooth, Rhythm, Argentine Tango, and more

Participants may find that age and level categories can vary by event, and they are often allowed to compete in multiple styles and even opt to compete in a higher level or lower age group.

Preparing for Pro-Am Competitions and Shows

To prepare effectively for a Pro-Am event:

  • Matching with a Teacher: We start by pairing you with the ideal teacher who suits your goals and preferred dance styles.
  • Event Planning: Choose your event and plan your training schedule, which will include private lessons complemented by technique classes and solo practice.
  • Attire and Enjoyment: Selecting the right attire is crucial, and most importantly, relish the entire experience. We are happy to offer you some advice on that.

Costs of Participating in Pro-Am

  • Private Lessons: A ten-hour package costs £890, which includes access to most group classes and studio space for solo practice. More info here…
  • Competition Expenses: These can vary based on the location and organizer of the event. If competitions are held in another city or abroad, costs for the teacher’s travel and accommodation are shared among students.
  • Event-Day Fees: An additional fee applies for the teacher on the day of the competition, calculated based on the competition’s location, the number of students the teacher is accompanying, and the number of dances entered.
